Drawing Supplies For This Tutorial:

HB pencil, tissue, tortillon/stump, kneaded eraser

Drawing the Outline

  1. Draw the outline of the clouds using an HB pencil. You want to draw the clouds loosely with some form.

Shade the Background

2. Before shading the background take a kneaded eraser and make the pencil outlines very light so that you can barely notice them. We don’t want lines showing up in the clouds.

3. Using an HB pencil shade the background horizontally. The top part of the sky will be slightly darker than the bottom. Transition the shading in the middle.

Blend the Background & Add Shadows

4. Use a tissue over your first finger and gently blend in all the shaded areas creating a blur effect around the clouds. Take some of the blended graphite into the clouds.

5. If needed, use a dirty tortillon to add some shadowed areas in the clouds.

Using a Kneaded Eraser

6. Pinch down an area of a kneaded eraser and gently fluff out the edges of the clouds. Add some lighter clouds to the blended sky.

7. Using the kneaded eraser add some highlighted areas to the clouds.
