Contrast between light and dark areas creates the illusion of three-dimensionality. When drawing a portrait, shadows help define the contours of the face, such as the cheekbones, jawline, and nose, making the face appear more lifelike.

Without sufficient contrast, the portrait might look flat or two-dimensional. These black pencils can create jet black shades, which can create contrast between light skin and dark eyes that can draw attention to those features.

It helps to separate the subject’s key characteristics from the rest of the face.
